The night flew by way too fast as the bantering took a notch up.
âDonât you dare tell them, Drake?â
He kept laughing, as they all wanted to know. The idiot slipped out the words, causing another dose of heat rushing up my cheeks.
âYou are duchy. Thanks for that.â
Everyone cracked themselves.
âI didnât think about the damn hospital gown, okay? It was life or death. My ass wouldnât matter much if I was six feet under the ground.â
Maverick took a huge breath and looked at Drake.
âDonât look at me like that. She can be glad it was me and not your perverted mind.â
Maverick laughed again as my eyes skidded to Drake, staring at him.
He shrugged. âWe are even now.â
Cali and Nikki got up as Chase tapped at his watch. âItâs ten thirty.â
âSo?â Brooke waved at them
Iâd deal with tomorrowâs tiredness. I hadnât had fun like this in a long time. Chase and the others left, and I told Drake no again. Maverick, Jacob and Emile chuckled.
I missed myself before the headaches.
Still, I liked the Fire-Bird more after tonight. I was afraid that this was going to happen. It sucked to have a crush on a guy that was clearly only going to end as friend material.
He begged me a lot on his brotherâs behalf, but I decided Chase was not my griffin. We might have a lot of things in commonâaccording to Drakeâbut I still remembered what heâd said tonight in the hallway. It was weird how all of them thought I was a shield. I saw things that nobody else could see.
The bar was quite stuffy, and the tiredness burned behind my eyelids.
I got up and looked at Brooke, pointing at the loo. She nodded, still speaking to Parvati.
I washed my hands and splashed cold water on my face. I tapped my face dry with the inside of my jersey, as there was no towel in sight. My bed called me and I silently prayed that Brooke was ready to leave, too.
When I reached the table, Brookeâs and Xanderâs chairs were empty.
âShe left me?â I asked Maverick.
âRelax. I told her Iâll take ye home,â Maverick said.
âWhy did she leave?â Fear of sneaking in alone sprawled over my face.
âItâs none of yer business, Sophie,â Maverick scolded playfully.
I lifted my palms. âOkay, thatâs plenty of answers, thank you. Iâm actually tired now. I need to sleep as I feel another headache pulsing.â
Maverick looked at me, concerned. âOkay, tis not normal, Lass.â
I chuckled and thought it was sweet the way he cared. âWelcome to my world. I heard that a lot since I got here.â
âItâs normal for shields,â Drake said with confidence.
âWhy does everyone say Iâm a shield? Because I see through your bullshit.â My lips curved.
Parvati reached over the table and high-fived me.
Drake chuckled. âI would like to see how you are going to sneak into the academy tonight.â
âOh, Iâve been silently preparing that speech for when Mrs. Beatty is going to catch me, because something tells me she knows that a couple of us are not in our rooms.
