The night flew by way too fast as the bantering took a notch up.

“Don’t you dare tell them, Drake?”

He kept laughing, as they all wanted to know. The idiot slipped out the words, causing another dose of heat rushing up my cheeks.

“You are duchy. Thanks for that.”

Everyone cracked themselves.

“I didn’t think about the damn hospital gown, okay? It was life or death. My ass wouldn’t matter much if I was six feet under the ground.”

Maverick took a huge breath and looked at Drake.

“Don’t look at me like that. She can be glad it was me and not your perverted mind.”

Maverick laughed again as my eyes skidded to Drake, staring at him.

He shrugged. “We are even now.”

Cali and Nikki got up as Chase tapped at his watch. “It’s ten thirty.”

“So?” Brooke waved at them

I’d deal with tomorrow’s tiredness. I hadn’t had fun like this in a long time. Chase and the others left, and I told Drake no again. Maverick, Jacob and Emile chuckled.

I missed myself before the headaches.

Still, I liked the Fire-Bird more after tonight. I was afraid that this was going to happen. It sucked to have a crush on a guy that was clearly only going to end as friend material.

He begged me a lot on his brother’s behalf, but I decided Chase was not my griffin. We might have a lot of things in common—according to Drake—but I still remembered what he’d said tonight in the hallway. It was weird how all of them thought I was a shield. I saw things that nobody else could see.

The bar was quite stuffy, and the tiredness burned behind my eyelids.

I got up and looked at Brooke, pointing at the loo. She nodded, still speaking to Parvati.

I washed my hands and splashed cold water on my face. I tapped my face dry with the inside of my jersey, as there was no towel in sight. My bed called me and I silently prayed that Brooke was ready to leave, too.

When I reached the table, Brooke’s and Xander’s chairs were empty.

“She left me?” I asked Maverick.

“Relax. I told her I’ll take ye home,” Maverick said.

“Why did she leave?” Fear of sneaking in alone sprawled over my face.

“It’s none of yer business, Sophie,” Maverick scolded playfully.

I lifted my palms. “Okay, that’s plenty of answers, thank you. I’m actually tired now. I need to sleep as I feel another headache pulsing.”

Maverick looked at me, concerned. “Okay, tis not normal, Lass.”

I chuckled and thought it was sweet the way he cared. “Welcome to my world. I heard that a lot since I got here.”

“It’s normal for shields,” Drake said with confidence.

“Why does everyone say I’m a shield? Because I see through your bullshit.” My lips curved.

Parvati reached over the table and high-fived me.

Drake chuckled. “I would like to see how you are going to sneak into the academy tonight.”

“Oh, I’ve been silently preparing that speech for when Mrs. Beatty is going to catch me, because something tells me she knows that a couple of us are not in our rooms.
